Laser Eye Surgery:
Laser eye surgery is one of the most important advancements in ophthalmology in the last 20 years.

What is a laser and how it works?

Laser is a light bean that is emitted through a special device. This light can pass through the tissues of the eye and is used to treat many eye diseases.

What are the diseases treated with laser?

First: Retinal diseases

1- Retinal tears and holes:
Retinal holes or tears cause sudden flashes of light or floaters in front of the eye, with affection of vision, and could lead to retinal detachment. Laser is used to treat such conditions using a special type called Argon laser. These holes or tears can lead to retinal detachment where the treatment will be surgical, not using the laser.

2- Diabetic retinal changes:
These changes can lead to loss of vision if not treated early. Diabetes can cause leakage associated with diminution of vision. Also, diabetes can cause growth of abnormal vessels or scarring in the retina, and patients can have these conditions without affection of vision in the early stages of the disease, hence the importance of regular check-ups by the ophthalmologist especially for patient s who are diabetics for a long time. Laser treatment can be done in several sittings until control of the disease, followed by regular visits to the ophthalmologist.

3- Macular degenerations:

It is a disease of old age. It doesn’t cause total loss of vision but severely impairs the macular and the ability to read. Early cases can be helped with some vitamins and minerals but advanced cases need laser treatment using Argon laser. In most cases, vision can improve but the main goal of treatment is stopping its deterioration.

4- Retinal vein occlusion:

Normally, retinal veins carry blood from the retina – the light sensitive part of the eye – to the vascular circulation and the heart, and occlusion of these veins causes its walls to leak blood and fluids to the retina. The occlusion can affect the central vein in the retina and vision is severely impaired especially the old patients than the young ones.

The occlusion can happen in one the peripheral branches and the area of the retina drained by this vein is affected and visual affection is less than the central vein occlusion. There are diseases with which vein occlusion is associated like glaucoma, hypertension, diabetes, vascular diseases with old and, and finally with blood diseases.

Symptoms include diminution of vision and floaters interfering with vision and sometimes pain in the eye. When a patient is affected, fluorescein angiography is needed and the proper treatment is decided accordingly, for example medical treatment with close follow up, or laser treatment where the laser prevents vitreous hemorrhage or neovascular glaucoma, that is happened, laser will have no role.

And through fluorescein angiography, evaluation of the severity of the condition is assess and laser treatment helps prevent hemorrhaging or fibrosis to occur, which in turn affects the vision.
There are other diseases that can be treated effectively with laser

Second: Glaucoma
And it affects 2% at least of the population, and failure to treat it causes atrophy in the optic nerve due to increased pressure inside the eye. But this can be prevented if diagnosed and treated early before affection of the optic nerve.

Early treatment is considered the first method to treat the patent effectively. And the pressure inside the eye can be controlled using medications in open angle glaucoma.
When medical treatment fails, laser can be used to allow the aqueous (the fluid inside the eye) to flow through its normal passages and reduce pressure inside the eye.

Third: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO)
PCO can develop following cataract surgery in the eye and it hinders proper vision and YAG laser is used to create an opening in this capsule.
There’s a common notion that laser can remove cataracts and this is not true; it can be used post operatively to create an opening in the capsule.

What are the benefits of laser eye surgery?
Laser eye surgery became a necessity for many reasons, as:
. No risk of infection
. Pain is minimal
. Often, it is an outpatient procedure
. Laser gives the ophthalmologist a degree of precision that wasn’t available before, using fine microscopes
. This precision, along with safety and comfort and a good price offers the chance for many patients to be treated successfully from many eye diseases.

Finally, your ophthalmologist is the educated, well trained, authorized person to take care of your eyes, and to perform laser eye surgery
