What id cataract?
Inside the eye, there’s a lens to focus the image on the retina, and cataract is the opacification of the lens like a glass when it’s frosted or have water vapor on.
There are misconceptions about cataract, such as:
- It forms because of over use of the eye
- Causes a form of cancer
- Can be transferred from one eye to the other
-  Causes permanent blindness

And the most common symptoms for cataract are:
- Vision is not clear
- Vision is not clear in sunlight or when driving facing headlights
- Constant change of glasses
- Double vision
- The need for strong light while reading
- Diminished vision at night
- Colors are pale or yellowed

And the amount of the opacification and it’s place in the lens differs from one person to the other. If the opacification is away from the center of the lens, vision can be maintained without feeling these opacifications.

what are the causes of cataract?
The most common cause is senility, but other causes include:
- Hereditary
- Chronic conditions as diabetes
- Eye trauma or previous operations
- Use of some drugs as cortisone

How can cataract be diagnosed?
Cataract can’t be seen from outside the eye without using medical devices , and the person experiencing such symptoms to go to the ophthalmologist for a check-up to determine the type, size and position of the cataract, also tp perform fundus examination and eye pressure checking.

At what speed cataract progresses?
It differs from person to person and from one eye to the other but most cases of senile cataract increases gradually. Some types of cataracts especially in young persons or diabetics increases rapidly and vision drops within few months, so progression cannot be predicted and if left without surgery, opacity fills the lens and causes severe diminution of vision.

What is the treatment of cataract?
Surgery is the only effective way to remove the cataract. You can’t treat cataract with medicines, eye drops, special diet, exercise or optical devices, since they don’t prevent or treat cataract.

How can surgery be decided?
Most people have a lot of time to decide having surgery. The decision is not your doctor’s only; you have to talk with him and tell him how cataract affects your lifestyle.
